Suspected Copper Thief Shot

Garland Police responded to a shooting at 5701 Broadway Blvd. around 1:20 am, the Bargain Town – Variety & Furniture store.  When police arrived they found a man on the south side of the building holding a pistol and another man lying on the ground nearby.  The officer ordered the man to put down his gun and he complied.  Fire Paramedics were call to the scene to check the man lying on the ground and they found no signs of life.

The man who was holding the gun identified himself as the son of the owner of the business, Bargain Town.  He reported they recently had been having copper thefts from the roof of the building and a decision was made to guard their building from the roof overnight.  He reported shortly before the shooting and while on the roof of the building he witnessed a man climb onto the roof.  He confronted the man at gun point and while confronting him fired his gun striking the man at least one time in the upper torso of the body.  The man then fled back off of the building where he had just climbed up.  The owner’s son followed the man down.  He followed the man as he went south behind the building and when they reached the south end of the building the man collapsed to the ground.  Police were called and began their investigation.  The dead man had a small backpack on his back with assorted tools inside that police believe could be used for stealing copper.

The owner’s son is cooperating with police and has come the Police Station where he is giving a statement as to what happened.  At this time police do not intend to file charges on the owner’s son who is 25 years of age.

Police believe they have identified the would-be thief and will release his name when next of kin notifications are completed.
