The Specialized Crimes Section is a covert investigative section comprised of the Intelligence Unit, Sex Offender Apprehension and Registration Unit, and the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit.  The investigators assigned to these various units are highly trained and motivated, each possessing a broad background in criminal investigative experience.  The Intelligence Unit specializes in Homeland Defense issues, extremist groups, dangerous individuals, surveillance, information gathering, assimilation and dissemination, vice investigations and many others.
 
The Sex Offender Apprehension and Registration Unit is comprised of investigators who specialize in sex offender registration law and are charged with the responsibility of monitoring approximately 200 registered sexual offenders in the city each year.  These investigators conduct compliance investigations, surveillances and sex offender registrations on a daily basis, as well as the maintenance of the sex offender public notice listings.  In addition, they identify “high risk” sex offenders and regularly make sure they are in compliance with the conditions of the registration laws.  When violations are discovered, this unit aggressively pursues the filing of charges against the offenders.  Another aspect of this unit is the physical inspection of the offender’s registered home address to make sure each is in compliance.
 
The Internet Crimes Against Children Unit is a highly specialized investigative unit with the sole purpose of seeking out, identifying, arresting and prosecuting the Internet child sexual predator.  This unit utilizes incredibly complicated technology in their investigations and has been highly successful in its efforts.  The unit started with federal grant funding in 2001.  In the first year and a half, the unit has become one of the most successful units of its kind in the country.  The personnel assigned to this unit have been the key to success, as they approach their jobs enthusiastically and bring innovative thinking and technology to bear on Internet Crimes Against Children.  Sexual predators from both inside and outside the state are apprehended and prosecuted for these crimes.
