Tonight, Tuesday May 6, the Garland City Council will present the Chief of Police with a resolution honoring the upcoming National Police Week. This years National Police Week is May 11 through 17 with National Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15.
181 law enforcement officers nationwide lost their lives in the line of duty in 2007. Garland has lost three officers in the line of duty; Gerald Walker in 1989, David Moore in 1997, and Ronnie Lerma in 1998.
At tonight’s presentation Chief Bates will be announcing a fundraiser by the employees/families of the Garland Police Department, the Garland Fraternal Order of Police, and the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association for the upcoming National Peace Officers Memorial Museum. The raised funds will go to the $80 million facility scheduled to open in Washington DC in 2011, in conjunction with the National Peace Officers Memorial. There are many Garland citizens, businesses and organizations who have expressed an interest in donating to such a worthy cause. Funds will be collected over the next month with all monies going to the Museum fund.
Those wishing to make a donation can do so by contacting any of the following; Cindy Hale in Police Administration 972-205-2012, Garland FOP or the Garland Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association.
