Office of the Chief of Police

Chief M. Bates

Welcome to the Garland Police Department website!

I am very proud of the sworn and civilian employees of this department who dedicate their careers and even their lives to keeping our community safe by doing their best to reduce crime.  The efforts of the men and women of this agency, combined with the cooperation and hard work of our citizens, have led to a reduction in the Part I Index Crimes of the FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR)  for the City of Garland for the third year in a row!

In 2006, Garland experienced a 4.5% reduction in crime (which includes a 12.1% reduction in Violent Crime and a 3.9% reduction in Property Crime).  Over the past three years, we have experienced a cumulative reduction of 22.0%!  Part I Index Crimes of the UCR Report include:  Murder, Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Burglary of a Habitation, Burglary of a Building, Theft, and Motor Vehicle Theft.  It is important, however, to keep in mind that the UCR Report is only a “snapshot” of crime.  It is simply one measurement of our efforts to make a positive impact in the reduction of crime in our community.

If you are a resident or business owner in our community, we hope that by visiting our website you will be able to learn more about the men and women who make up your police department.  Our workforce consists of 327 sworn officers and 142 civilian personnel (for a total of 469 individuals) who do their best to work as a team to make Garland a safer place to live, work, and play.  As I stated earlier, I am extremely proud of the members of our department and believe that you will not find a law enforcement agency more dedicated to protecting their community.  The mission of the Garland Police department is to protect life and property, and to provide a feeling of safety and security in the community through fair and impartial enforcement of the law, community partnerships, and creative problem solving.  We will always do our best to fulfill our mission to protect and serve those in our community.

For those of you who may be new to our community, we have much to offer.  In North Garland, Firewheel Town Center, a 103-acre, $132 million layout, which includes more than 100 different retailers, mimics a small town, with two main streets that intersect near a clock tower and a park with a fountain, a stream and a playground. It's meant to incorporate small-town nostalgia and modern efficiency.  In South Garland, development has also been completed on a Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World store overlooking Lake Ray Hubbard.  The outdoor store, which will anchor the new 28-acre Harbor Point Development, includes approximately 120,000 square foot of retail selling space plus a restaurant, boat super center and a marina.  Harbor Point is a retail/entertainment development on the western shore of Lake Ray Hubbard featuring 54 courtesy docks, six on-the-water restaurants, conference center hotel, 16000 square feet of small shop retail and four retail pad sites.  In downtown Garland, redevelopment plans have recently been approved which will change and revitalize the central hub of our community.  Please see the City of Garland (www.ci.garland.tx.us) or Garland Chamber of Commerce (www.garlandchamber.com) websites for more information on pending and future developments.

Whether you want to live, work, or play in Garland or if you’re simply interested in learning more, please take the time to check us out!  We have much to offer to families, homeowners, and businesses.

It is an honor and a privilege to serve as your Police Chief.  I hope to continue to do so as long as I can be worthy of your trust and respect.

Sincerely,

Mitch Bates

Garland Police Department
