Garland Fire and Police were dispatched to the report of a boy in Duck Creek below the Miller Road bridge at Glenbrook just after 8:00 pm Tuesday night, June 26, 2007. When they arrived, they found 13 year-old William Griffin of Garland clinging to a bridge support in the center of the creek. It was raining at the time, and the water had risen and was moving very fast around William. Fire rescuers threw a life line to him and as he took hold of the line, he slipped and was pulled loose by the water’s swift current. Three police officers jumped into the water in an effort to try and reach William, but were quickly pulled down by the creek's current and struggled to get back to safety. Emergency personnel quickly began working their way down the creek in an effort to locate the boy. The D.P.S. helicopter responded to the scene and some 2 1/2 hours later of the initial report, William was located lodged in a tall weed and brush area at the creek's edge just south of Kingsley Road. Police and Fire Paramedics were directed to the boy’s location from the helicopter’s point of view. Fire personnel pulled him from the water, began C.P.R., and transported him to Baylor Hospital of Garland. William was pronounced dead shortly after 11:30 pm.
