Attempted Capital Murder of A Police Officer

A Garland Police Officer responded to a major accident at the intersection of Jupiter Road and Forest Lane on Sunday, January 21, 2007, shortly after 3:00 pm.  The officer had collected the driver’s license of each driver when he noticed the odor of alcohol on the breath of one of them, 19 year-old David Arrona.  The officer told him he was placing him under arrest and began to place handcuffs on him.  He had one hand cuffed and was about to place the second cuff on, when David pulled his free hand loose and reached in front of him.  The next thing the officer saw was a pistol coming over the shoulder of Arrona.  The officer pushed Arrona away from him and the officer heard the gun click.  Arrona began to run away, then turned and fired at the officer.  The bullet struck a vehicle that was in a traffic lane of Jupiter Road.  Arrona began to run west across lanes of traffic on Forest Lane when he stopped again, turned and fired again at the officer, striking another vehicle on Forest Lane this time.  The officer did not fire back because of the traffic in the area, and Fire Department personnel that was around him.  No one was injured from the fired shots of Arrona.  Police officers responded to the area and set up a parameter that encompassed Forest Lane to Walnut, and Jupiter Road to Plano Road.  K-9 Officers also responded, along with DPS helicopter support, and searched the area into the night hours.  Garland Police finally located Arrona shortly after 9:00 pm in DallasGarland officers, with the assistance of Dallas Police, were able to take Arrona into custody without incident.  David Arrona will be held in the Garland Jail on a charge of Attempted Capital Murder on a Police Officer.  No bond has been set.
