The offense of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle (UUMV) is a state jail felony. It is punishable by incarceration of not less than 180 days or more than two years in a state jail facility. Detectives in the Auto Theft Unit are responsible for investigating vehicle burglaries and thefts of non-motorized vehicles, in addition to the stolen vehicle. These highly trained detectives also inspect vehicles in the Garland impound lot prior to an auction. The detectives check to assure the vehicles are legally titled before being sold.
Crimes of Opportunity
Many vehicle thefts and vehicle burglaries are crimes of opportunity. Please remember to turn your vehicle off and remove the keys if not occupied, properly secure it when parked, and conceal any items of value in the trunk or out of sight.
