Garland Police have adopted the lock your car, take your keys and hide your belongings program which first began in downtown Dallas. The Lock, Take and Hide program not only has an impact against vehicle break-ins but also residential, commercial and industrial properties.
The Garland Police Department has initiated awareness programs in the past related to auto burglary and auto theft, with some effectiveness and believes this initiative will enhance those efforts. The decrease of property crimes within our community continues to be one of the police department's goals. We feel that the Lock, Take and Hide program will be effective in communicating the need for our citizens to lock their cars, take their keys and hide their belongings. The large majority of thefts from autos occur when people leave their vehicles unsecured and expensive belongings in plain sight.
The Garland Police Department encourages business owners, apartment complexes and shopping centers throughout Garland to place the Lock, Take and Hide signs in various areas throughout their property.
Officers have already begun handing out paper storefront signs to businesses within our community in addition to having metal outdoor signs available from the police department. These weatherproof metal signs can be placed on light poles and used to remind drivers entering parking lots to "Lock, Take and Hide."
